Dune: Part Three Trailer Sales an Epic Conclusion
The final chapter of the Dune trilogy is finally coming. Let's dive in...
After all the build-up, Warner finally released the much-anticipated teaser trailer of Dune Part Three. While the movie is still far away (December), this is a major teaser trailer, one that really gives you the scope and atmosphere of this feature. It looks stunning, beautiful, and rich, something that you must see only on the biggest screen possible.
The movie is based on “Dune Messiah”, the second book in the saga, but it looks like it will be more of an adaptation than a page-to-screen translation. While the book is set 12 years after its predecessor, the movie will be set 17 years after. In fact, the book is a very small scale story, with minimal action. But not only the trailer featured tons of action sequences, director Denis Villeneuve revealed that this movie will be the most action-packed in the trilogy. It looks like they are going to show parts of the Holy War, which the book completely skipped at.
I had a feeling it would happen. With the studio positioning this movie as “The Epic Conclusion” (like Return of the King), this movie must have the epic feeling of the previous two movies. It must have big action scenes, big set pieces, everything that the audience came to love about this franchise. Judging by this teaser trailer, it seems we’re heading there. I wouldn’t be surprised if much of the third act will be about the Holy War and after that we will get the time skip.
The movie also has a new and returning cast. It looks like Zendaya will have a much more permanent role than in the book. While Rebecca Ferguson’s character doesn’t appear in the book at all, she will appear in the movie, but in a very small capacity. Anya Taylor-Joy is back as Alia after her short cameo in the previous movie, and even Jason Momoa is back, although I won’t reveal how. It’s also so great to see Robert Pattinson as Scytale! He looks so much different than usual, and it’s almost impossible to recognize him.
The movie lost its previous cinematographer, Greig Fraser, who did a fantastic job with the previous movies. Fortunately, his replacement, Linus Sandgren (who did La La Land, First Man, No Time to Die, etc.), is amazing as well – the movie simply looks gorgeous. The cinematography is both fresh and new, and every frame is simply a work of art.
Warner Bros. also kept the date – this movie is set to be released on December 18, the same day as Avengers: Doomsday. The studios are surely hoping for another “Barbernhimer” situation (fans calls it “Dunesday”), but it’s hard to know. Barbie and Oppenheimer were two very different movies, and these two movies feels way less different. Honestly? Anything could happen. I think that as long as Dune Part Three will be good at least as the previous movies and will be a big-scale worthy conclusion to the trilogy, it should be fine.
