How to Train Your Dragon Crosses 350 Million Worldwide
The live-action adaptation of How to Train your Dragon is a huge success for everyone involved. Let's dive in.
Universal and DreamWorks How to Train your Dragon grossed another 37 million at the domestic box office. That’s a drop of 58% from its opening weekend. Honestly? This is a sharper drop than I expected. Considering the fact that this is a movie for the entire family, the solid critics reviews and the glowing audience reviews and word-of-mouth, I was hoping for a drop in the 40% range. Usually family movies tend to have smaller drops.
There’s no need to worry. The movie is doing great overseas. It grossed another 53 million at the overseas box office, for an overseas total of 197 million and a worldwide total of 358 million. So we’re talking about a movie that cost 150 million dollars to make and already grossed over twice of its budget in less than two weeks. This is a great success for everyone involved no matter what. This movie is already one of the top 10 highest grossing movies of 2025.
So, how far can it fly? At a glance, it should have no problem to cross the 500 million milestone, which will be a huge success for the studio. In case this happens, it will officially pass the original animated movie from 2010, which grossed 494 million at the time. I really hope that the studio didn’t expect 1 billion final gross and call this movie a flop. I mean, if they did, they would have given this movie a higher budget (not that it needed that).
You need to look at this movie as an investment. This is a relaunch of a franchise. Even if this movie will finish its box office run around 500-600 million, the purpose is done. It made lots of money for the studio, and more importantly, the audience really liked it. That way, the sequel can have a huge bump when it opens in summer 2027, especially because of the new elements – Hiccup’s mom, tons of new dragons, more world-building, more characters, etc. The future is bright for “How to Train your Dragon”!
