Lilo and Stitch Crosses 600 million as Mission Impossible Crosses 350 million
Both movies are dominating the box office. Let's dive in...
Disney’s Lilo and Stitch continues to dominate the box office. The movie has grossed 278 million domestically and 334 million overseas, for a worldwide total of 613 million. That’s a fantastic result for any movie, and in this case, a movie that cost “only” 100 million to make. This is a huge win for everyone involved, especially for Disney. Moreover, it shows the massive power of Stitch. This dude is like the new Mickey Mouse.
As of now, I think it will end somewhere around 900 million. Of course, everyone hopes it will reach the magical 1 billion number, but I’m afraid it might suffer a tough competition when How to Train your Dragon will arrive on June 13. If this movie can survive it, then 1 billion might be a real possibility. Even if it’s not going to cross it, we’re still talking about a movie that grossed over 6x times its production budget in less than two weeks.
As for Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, the movie has grossed 122 million domestically and 231 million overseas, for a worldwide total of 353 million. It’s doing pretty well, and the audience seems to love it, and I believe it can cross 600 million. But, this movie cost around 400 million, so this one needs to gross at least 1 billion in order to break even, and the chances to get there are pretty slim.
Despite this, I think that Paramount will be quite happy. Yes, the budget is huge, but it wasn’t supposed to be. There were Covid and Strikes, and when you look at the other movies, excluding Dead Reckoning Part 1, each movie has a budget under 200 million. Most chances that in the long run in the streaming service, this movie will break even eventually. Not to mention that the franchise as a whole is a huge moneymaker for Paramount, so the fact that it’s getting good reviews and doing great business at the box office is very crucial to them.
