Obsession Crossed 400 Million Worldwide

With 245 million domestically and 158 overseas, Obsession has grossed 403 million worldwide. All of that against a budget of 750k, which you have to admit, is super impressive. I’ve been tracking the box office for over 15 years, and I’ve never seen something like this. This is truly a super rare phenomenon. Oh, it’s also Focus’ highest grossing film!
What is going on? This movie is one of the biggest stories in Hollywood history. It was made by director Curry Barker – he started on YouTube and this is his first full-length film. Imagine having your first movie gross over 400 million and receive tons of raves from critics and audiences alike.
How did it happen? It’s all about the power of word-of-mouth. People are coming out of the theaters and immediately telling their friends “You have to watch it NOW!”. The movie also benefits from repeat viewing – fans are coming back again and again to watch it. There’s something so special watching this movie in a packed theater, and people really want to experience it.
Clearly one of the greatest success stories in years, and trust me, people will talk about it years from now. As of now, I still think it has a shot to 450 million. The movie is doing strong business overseas, and it just recently opened in new countries (like Germany and Spain), so it might be able to reach that milestone.
I hope Hollywood will learn the right lessons from this. Don’t just do 5 Obsession sequels. Give chances to more young and original filmmakers and let them cook! Because that’s why Obsession is so successful. It has all the right ingredients: A strong hook, a great script, intense atmosphere, and above all, one of the greatest performances in years.
