Project Hail Mary Shows the Power of Word-of-Mouth
The Sci-Fi drama just crossed 500 million worldwide! Let's dive in...
Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary continues to crush the box office. The Sci-Fi drama already grossed 256 million domestically and 254 million overseas, for a worldwide total of 510 million. It’s already the third highest grossing movie of 2026 (behind Pegasus 3 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie), and the second highest grossing movie at the domestic box office of 2026. No need to say, this is a fantastic achievement.
When it comes to the domestic performance, it’s already outgrossed The Martian (228 million) and Interstellar (203 million), so this is already pretty impressive. If we look at another original big-budget movie from last year, F1, then Hail Mary also outgrossed this one (189 million), although that movie was really big overseas (it grossed 443 million overseas for a worldwide total of 633 million).
The big question is - how far can it go? I think there’s a big chance that it will be able to cross 600 million, which will be huge. This movie is the only “big movie” right now, so it has the advantage, and the fact that it was able to survive the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is also very encouraging. I will say that the biggest obstacle will be the upcoming “Michael” movie from Lionsgate. Still, these two movies are vastly different from each other, so Hail Mary might coexist pretty nicely.
In the end, this movie is a hit thanks to the perfect combination – amazing directors (Phil Lord and Christopher Miller), a popular actor (Ryan Gosling), a best-seller source material (the novel by Andy Weir), positive reviews, and above all – the power of word-of-mouth. That’s the real deal. People love this movie. They are going to watch it again and again. Everyone described it as the ultimate cinema experience, one that you must see in theaters. This is actually not unlike Dune, F1 and Interstellar. In the end, people love these huge “cinema event”, and I really hope that we will get more movies like this one. Even if Project Hail Mary won’t cross 600 million, it’s already a big hit. Kudos to everyone involved.
